Returning to the UEFA Champions League was always the target for Villarreal CF but on Monday night, such hopes were pegged back by a resilient Sevilla side who want to also cement their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
With both sides going into the clash looking to win it, Villarreal started on a bright note and were rewarded for their desire to go in front with a goal from January signing, Paco Alcacer, who put them in front in the 18th minute of play.
Sevilla on the other hand got a goal through left back Sergio Escudero, who scored in the 39th to level the game.
The score was not to remain so for long as Pau Torres a defender put Villarreal in front for the second time in the game.
The first half ended with Villarreal CF leading 2-1.
The second half saw a determined Sevilla side who equalized almost immediately after the restart, with a goal of their own through Munir El Haddadi.
In the end both sides have to settle for the share of the spoils as Nigerian Youngster Samuel Chukwueze who started the game was replaced in the 72nd minute by Javier Ontiveros. The Nigerian had a decent outing as he completed only 2 of his attempted 4 dribbles, he had a single shot which was off target and one unsuccessful cross.
Villarreal CF occupies the last UEFA Europa League place in 6th on 48 points while Sevilla remained 4th on 53 points.
