A player the Blues bought for £48.7million to solve their goal scoring problem as they aim to contend for the Premiership title and compete with the big Clubs, Timo Werner, finally made his debut for the Blues.
It was Alzate after receiving a pass from Goal Keeper, Matt Ryan, who tried to square a ball to Bissouma but was intercepted by Jorginho who immediately played Werner through on goal. He won the penalty that Jorginho converted with ease after goalkeeper Matt Ryan made a mess of things up as Brighton and Hove Albion tried to play their way out of the back.
The Blues newest recruit was full of running all game causing the Brighton backline all sort of problems as they looked everywhere for a player who seems not to be sticking to a particular position on the pitch.
Though Brighton managed to equalize following a misjudge by Kepa of the Leandro Trossard left footed shot from just out side the box, it was Chelsea’s defenders who ensured that the game was put to bed.
The first was a thunderbolt of a shot from Right Back, Reece James from almost 25 yards out which left Matt Ryan helpless. The second which James, was also involved in was a corner kick which Zouma volleyed home, thanks to a deflection from Adam Webster.
Timo Werner had a very good game but on the contrary his German International teammate, Kai Havertz was poor all game despite having 88% passing accuracy. It’s quite understandable in the case of Havertz, who only trained with the Blues for four days before his debut as reported by Frank Lampard.
In a post match interview, Werner after being quizzed bya reporter of what he makes of his debut, he had this to say
“I have never played against 3 defenders like this so tall, so big massive defenders!”.
He was later asked by the reporter if he will be fit for the Liverpool FC clash on Sunday, a seemingly excited Werner said “for games like that one is always fit“.
His responses to the questions he was asked shows that Werner was not used to playing against such giants of a set of defenders (Webster, Ben White and Lewis Dunk), his response to being available for the Liverpool clash shows that he is a born fighter and raring to go.
