Eagles Soar to New Heights: Big Ten’s Second-Best Pass Rusher Joins the Nest

Time flies when you’re having fun. Nothing beats seeing a Super Bowl win. Well, looky here! The Philadelphia Eagles are on top of the mountain again. 32 teams begin the same quest with the same goals each season. Qualify for the postseason. Be the only team in a 14-team field to end its season with a win.

This time, the Birds accomplished that goal. Thanks to their hard work, they raised the Lombardi Trophy, but just like that, it’s time to begin the journey again. They’re right back where they started, back in that pack of 32 teams trying to climb the ladder leading to glory.

We’ve watched the game. We ordered our T-shirts and all types of paraphernalia after winning. A parade came on Valentine’s Day, but it’s time to go to work again. The NFL Scouting Combine begins on February 27.

We’re about to spend tons of time discussing the coming 2025 NFL Draft. You know what that means. It’s mock draft season.

Eagles add Ohio State Buckeyes star Jack Sawyer in a recent mock draft constructed by Pro Football Focus.

One of the important decisions Philly will have to make during free agency involves whether or not to extend Josh Sweat. He recently hired representation, and it’s the legendary Drew Rosenhaus. We wouldn’t be shocked if Sweaty returned or landed elsewhere.

Then, there’s the Brandon Graham angle. Though he hasn’t officially announced his retirement, it is expected he’ll ride off into the sunset after a storybook ending to a 15-year run in the City of Brotherly Love.

It would make sense for Philly to add a pass rusher. A possible trade to add Myles Garrett has been a popular discussion topic. If the Birds pursue a less-expensive approach, they could explore prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Pro Football Focus tried its hand at a mock draft recently. The Cleveland Browns trade Garrett to Dallas to claim the 12th overall selection in their simulation. Jack Sawyer lands in Philly as the 32nd selection.

Jordan Plocher, the writer of this one, explains.

“Howie Roseman proved again this season that he is the best team-building general manager in the NFL. Sawyer would be another productive pass-rusher for the Eagles, as he earned a 90.5 PFF pass-rush grade in 2024 and came up with key plays in big games.”

Most view Sawyer as the Big Ten’s second best edge rusher behind Penn State’s Abdul Carter. We’d agree. Sawyer collected 59 total tackles, nine sacks, seven pass breakups, and three forced fumbles in addition to an interception this season,

Carter earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2022 before claiming a pair of First-Team nods in 2023 and 2024. He was also named a Unanimous All-American and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.

Sawyer is a two-time Second-team All-Big Ten nod thanks, in part, to Carter’s accomplishments (2023,2024). His Ohio State Buckeyes claimed the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship as part of the NCAA’s expanded field during the most recent season.

Both will make valuable additions to whichever team drafts them. Carter, however, seems like someone who will already be drafted when Philly is on the board. In a deep draft class for edge rushers however, Sawyer will make one heck of a consolation prize.
