Here’s what an extension might look like for Eagles edge rusher Josh Sweat

The NFL Draft is an inexact science, but the Philadelphia Eagles and most teams enter each selection meeting with the same plan: Get a few difference-makers. Fill those areas of need. Build for the future.

Ultimately, the goal is simple. Get better than you were last season. The plan for every first and second-rounder is typically the same. They normally need to contribute rather early.

The middle rounds can be more of a crap shoot. Players taken on Day 2 during Rounds 3 and 4 are players most teams hope can contribute. That being said, Philly hit the jackpot in landing Josh Sweat several years ago..

‘Sweaty’, as he’s affectionately known, was the 130th player taken during Round 4 of the 2018 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s recorded 237 total tackles, 43 sacks, an interception, 11 pass breakups, and seven forced fumbles during 104 regular-season games with 64 starts. He’s added another 21 tackles, five sacks, and a forced fumble in nine career playoff games.

That’s excellent work for a guy taken during the draft’s middle rounds.

He was also a key cog in the Eagles’ 2024-25 Super Bowl run. This offseason, he’s one of Philly’s impending free agents. We’d love to see him back with an extension, but there is no guarantee.

So, what might Josh Sweat’s extension look like if the Eagles elected to give him one?

Once the NFL’s negotiating period begins, Josh Sweat will be one of the more coveted edge rushers available. His deal will more than likely be one of the first that are announced once the new league year begins on March 12.

According to Spotrac, Sweaty’s fair market value is as follows: three years, $56,466,831 with an average salary of $18,822,277. That would rank 101st in the NFL and tenth among outside linebackers.
