The New England Patriots continue to add talent to their defense.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots are signing former Detroit Lions cornerback Carlton Davis III to a three-year, $60 million contract that averages $20 million a year and has $34.5 million fully guaranteed.
New England already has Christian Gonzalez at cornerback, but they needed to add someone to play opposite of him. And Davis is the right man for the job.
Davis began his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, remaining there for six seasons before going to the Lions for the 2024 season. This past year, he recorded 56 total tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and 11 passes defended across 13 games.
In his career, he has 380 total tackles, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, 11 interceptions, and 84 passes defended in 89 games played.
A to Z Sports’ Lions reporter Mike Payton detailed how important of a signing Davis is for the Patriots.
“The Lions traded a third-round pick for Davis during last year’s free agency and he made an impact early on in the season. But when he got hurt in December and Amik Robertson stepped up, played arguably as good or better in some cases, you knew the Lions would let Davis go and get paid big elsewhere. Davis is going to be great for the Patriots to help get that secondary going. He can play well against the bigger receivers and can hold his own against some of the best in the league,” Payton wrote.
One thing is for sure: the duo of Gonzalez and Davis is going to be fun to watch.
