A former Baltimore Ravens assistant coach and a member of the staffs of brothers John and Jim Harbaugh has been indicted on charges of hacking into computers, stealing identities and compromising thousands of intimate photographs and videos of college students.
Matt Weiss, who coached for the Ravens from 2009-20, is alleged to have hacked into the computer accounts of thousands of college athletes in an attempt to get intimate photos and videos, according to an indictment filed in federal court in Detroit this week. He has been charged with 14 counts of unauthorized computer access and 10 counts of identity theft.
After leaving John Harbaugh’s staff in 2020, Weiss went to the University of Michigan to serve as a co-offensive coordinator for Jim. He was fired in 2023 after failing to cooperate with the school’s investigation of his access to computers.
According to the indictment, Weiss gained access to databases of more than 100 colleges and universities that were maintained by a third-party vendor. He then accessed the social media, email and cloud storage accounts of more than 2,000 athletes, according to the indictment.
Reads the indictment: “Weiss primarily targeted female college athletes. He researched and targeted these women based on their school affiliation, athletic history and physical characteristics. His goal was to obtain private photographs and videos never intended to be shared beyond intimate partners.”
His Ann Arbor home was searched by police in January 2023, shortly before he was fired. He said at the time that he was cooperating and was looking “forward to the matter being resolved.”
With the Ravens, Weiss won a ring in Super Bowl XLVII and as linebackers coach helped Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil be the NFL’s top sack tandem and C.J. Mosley to become the first rookie in franchise history to be selected to the Pro Bowl.
