The Philadelphia Eagles’ roster will look much different in 2025 than it did in 2024 after several key players were lost to both free agency and trades. One of the biggest, though, was sending safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for offensive lineman Kenyon Green and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Considering Gardner-Johnson started 16 regular season games and all of the team playoff matchups, it leaves a big hold in the second, which Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports thinks they will fill by signing safety Justin Simmons.
“Simmons isn’t as dynamic as he once was, now 31, but he’s got valuable experience in Vic Fangio’s defense from their time together with the Denver Broncos,” Benjamin wrote. “He’s already expressed interest in going to Philly.”
Simmons is coming off a good season with the Atlanta Falcons, being targeted 37 times while only allowing 22 receptions, 229 yards, three touchdowns, and an 81.9 passer rating, while also logging two interceptions and seven pass deflections. It wouldn’t be a major step down from Gardner-Johnson, who had six interceptions and 12 pass deflections while being targeted 37 times, allowing 23 receptions, 312 yards, eight touchdowns, and an 89 passer rating.
The Eagles wouldn’t have to shell out a ton of money for the four-time Second-Team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, with Spotrac placing Simmons’ market value at $5.8 million annually.
