Los Angeles Rams Re-Sign Veteran Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon for Third Year
The Los Angeles Rams have made another move to solidify their secondary by re-signing veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to a one-year contract. This marks his third consecutive season with the team after initially signing with them in 2023. The deal reinforces the Rams’ commitment to bolstering their defensive backfield ahead of the upcoming NFL season.
Witherspoon, who turns 30 this week, has been a key contributor for the Rams since joining the team. Last season, he played in 13 games, making five starts, and recorded 31 total tackles, nine passes defensed, and one interception. One of his standout moments came in a crucial divisional matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, where he made a game-sealing interception that helped the Rams clinch the NFC West title.
Originally drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Witherspoon has developed into a reliable and experienced cornerback. Over his nine-year NFL career, he has played for the 49ers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Rams, accumulating 12 career interceptions and 52 passes defensed. His experience and playmaking ability make him a valuable asset to the Rams’ defensive unit, which is looking to improve following last year’s playoff exit.
By bringing back Witherspoon, the Rams add depth to a cornerback room that includes Darious Williams, Cobie Durant, Emmanuel Forbes Jr., Josh Wallace, Charles Woods, and Derion Kendrick. Kendrick is returning from a knee injury, and the Rams are expected to add another defensive back in the upcoming NFL Draft.
