The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to sign Aaron Rodgers for the 2025 NFL season. However, a two-time Super Bowl champion with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick discourages Mike Tomlin and company from doing so.
Not many teams got to win a Super Bowl during the Tom Brady and Bill Belichick era, with the duo dominating the NFL for years on the New England Patriots. The Pittsburgh Steelers managed to do so with Mike Tomlin in 2009, before Aaron Rodgers prevented them from repeating the feat in 2011.
Flash-forward to 2025, Brady and Belichick are no longer competing for championships, but Tomlin and Rodgers still are. In fact, they could even chase a ring together this season, with the Steelers aiming to sign the free agent quarterback.
A two-time Super Bowl champion with Brady and Belichick, however, believes it’s not a good idea. Speaking on NBC’s “Football Night in America” show on YouTube, former NFL safety Rodney Harrison warned Tomlin’s Steelers against signing Rodgers.
“At times, he’s gonna give you some great moments in spot duty,” Harrison said, via Matthew Marczi of Steelers Depot. “But overall, I don’t trust him. I don’t trust that he’s gonna stay healthy. I don’t trust that it’s gonna be a good situation.”

Harrison knows a thing or two about winning championships. A Super Bowl champion with Brady and Belichick‘s Patriots in 2004 and 2005, the two-time Pro Bowler believes Rodgers doesn’t have enough left in the tank to help the Steelers go the distance.

“He is old, man, and this league is not built for old guys. This league is built for young guys,” Harrison said. “…I have a lot of respect for Aaron and what he’s accomplished, but he’s not that dude anymore…There’s no way I would touch Aaron Rodgers. I wouldn’t even entertain it.”
Rodgers’ options for the 2025 NFL season
At 41, Rodgers’ future looks unclear. The quarterback is free to sign with any team after parting with the New York Jets, who opted to move on from him this offseason as their two-year marriage didn’t go to plan.
The veteran signal-caller already met Tomlin during a visit to the Steelers earlier this month, though his intentions for the 2025 NFL season remain uncertain. The Minnesota Vikings appear to be a possible competitor for Pittsburgh, but their decision to move forward with J.J. McCarthy decreases the possibilities of a commitment to Rodgers.
Of course, the question is whether Rodgers intends to play next year. He doesn’t seem to have many options outside Pittsburgh, but it’s up to him whether to come back for a 21st season in the NFL.
Tomlin, Steelers’ alternatives to A-Rod
In the meantime, Tomlin and Steelers made sure to get some insurance by bringing back Mason Rudolph. The team also holds the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, making the likes of Jalen Milroe, Jaxson Dart, and Will Howard potential candidates.
