The Indianapolis Colts have let many of their key in-house free agents walk this offseason, but they just locked a starter from 2024 back in for the 2025 season.
The team announced that they have re-signed tight end Mo Alie-Cox, and the fan base has mixed feelings about the move.
Colts bring TE Mo Alie-Cox back for the 2025 season
Mo Alie-Cox has been with the Colts since 2018 after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent. His path to the NFL is a unique one, with him not playing college football and making the leap to professional football after a successful college basketball career at VCU.
Alie-Cox has appeared in 108 games over the past seven seasons and made 47 starts, recording 114 receptions, 1,433 yards, and 15 touchdowns. Like the rest of the Colts TE room, Alie-Cox is coming off a disappointing 2024 season, with him only recording 12 receptions for 147 yards and one touchdown. Where he excelled, though, was as a blocker for the team, which I’m sure played a major factor in the team electing to bring him back for another year.
The fan base, though, wasn’t pleased to see this move. They see the Colts bringing back a starter at TE who underperformed and contributed to the team’s having one of the worst TE rooms in the league last year. However, I don’t think this move should be looked at as the Colts look at Alie-Cox as someone who should continue to be a starter. I think they saw a very good blocking TE who is still available in April and added him to the room. I think if fans saw a random blocking TE signed instead of Alie-Cox, there wouldn’t have been nearly as much complaining about the move. And in reality, it’s the same thing. It just happens to be someone who has been here for seven years, which honestly makes it better. This signing won’t stop the Colts from addressing TE in the draft, but it helps raise the floor of the room in case the rookie TE goes through some ups and downs like rookie TE’s typically do.
