The veteran was picked fourth overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2015 NFL Draft before joining the Dallas Cowboys in 2018. He didn’t stick around forever, but could be returning.
The Dallas Cowboys have wrapped up their biggest roster haul of the year. At this point, no one can expect Jerry Jones to change the roster via a free agency splurge, but the NFL Draft was a different story.
At the 2025 NFL Draft, Jones added nine pieces to the roster. With the eventual cuts taking the team down to 53 players, Jones could have added roughly 20% of the 2025 roster in a three day span. From Phil Mafah to offensive guard Tyler Booker, the team’s choices have caused controversy, particularly in the choice to pursue running backs in later rounds.
The Dallas Cowboys could have traded up for Ashton Jeanty, but instead looked for diamonds in the rough. They settled on Mafah and Jaydon Blue. However, while Jones’ draft choices have caused questions, most fans might be happy with the newest potential move in the works.
Amari Cooper interest trends up for return to Cowboys
Writing for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on April 28, reporter Nick Harris claimed there was interest from the Dallas Cowboys in bringing back former Cowboys star Amari Cooper.
“While attention is still devoted to the trade market, so is the availability of veteran free agents. … There is building team interest in bringing free agent Amari Cooper back for a reunion in Dallas, according to a Star-Telegram team source.
“Team interest is one thing, but the appeal will have to be reciprocated by Cooper if the two sides do, in fact, connect over a second stint with the Cowboys,” he said.
Cooper is coming off a 547 yard, four touchdown season between time split with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. Cooper battled injury in 2024, but appears to be expected to be healthy in time for 2025 unless something changes.
Amari Cooper’s return could have plenty of awkward early moments
While the return of Amari Cooper certainly could be a headline-grabber, the early moments of a return could be fraught with awkward moments. Cooper was essentially the CeeDee Lamb before CeeDee Lamb, working as his mentor early in his career.
This time around, he would be playing behind Lamb, facing all of the implications and troubles associated with that. Plus, the Cowboys were the ones to cut ties with Cooper in the first place, trading him to the Cleveland Browns in 2022.
It could only be at the back of his mind that the Cowboys could cut ties once again. Plus, it could be his first time speaking with Jerry Jones after getting told he would be going to the other side of the country.
If Cooper and the Cowboys can get past that, such a move would make sense.
