The New York Jets are adding another weapon to their offensive arsenal, agreeing to terms with former University of Michigan running back Donovan Edwards as an undrafted free agent. Edwards, a key contributor to Michigan’s back-to-back College Football Playoff runs, will now begin his professional career in the Big Apple.
Despite going unselected in the 2025 NFL Draft, Edwards drew interest from multiple teams due to his athleticism, receiving ability, and big-game performances. At 6’1″ and 210 pounds, Edwards brings size, vision, and versatility to a Jets backfield already featuring Breece Hall.
During his time at Michigan, Edwards carved out a role as both a runner and receiver, known for his game-breaking plays — including a 216-yard, two-touchdown performance against Ohio State in 2022 that helped solidify Michigan’s playoff berth. While his college production was sometimes overshadowed by fellow Wolverine Blake Corum, Edwards showcased NFL traits: smooth hands, breakaway speed, and natural instincts in space.
For the Jets, signing Edwards is a low-risk, high-upside move. If he adapts quickly to the speed of the NFL, he could emerge as a valuable third-down back or even push for a larger role in the rotation.
“Donovan is a talented, explosive athlete. We’re excited to see what he can bring to this team,” a Jets source told reporters shortly after the signing.
Edwards will join the Jets for rookie minicamp in the coming weeks, aiming to earn a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad. With the right development and opportunity, he could be a name to watch in the coming season.
