The Baltimore Orioles expected big things this season.
Instead, they’ve fired their manager before the end of May. The team announced Brandon Hyde’s dismissal just after 12 noon on Saturday.
The Orioles have begun the season 15-28, and they sit 4.5 games into the basement of the AL East. They trail the division-leading Yankees by 10.5, with the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Rays all substantially ahead of them, too.
“The Orioles have been the most disappointing team in baseball this season,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote on X. “They are 15-28, the fourth-worst record in MLB. They have an ERA of 5.33, the worst in the AL. Their offseason acquisitions have flopped. A nightmare season they’re hoping a managerial change can salvage.”
Hyde took over the Orioles in 2019. He has a 421-492 record with Baltimore.
Before this season, though, the Orioles had rattled off three winning seasons in a row.
That stretch included 101 wins and a Manager of the Year award in 2023.
Hyde, who also managed a singular game for the Marlins in 2011, is 51 years old.
Tony Mansolino takes over as Baltimore’s interim manager. He has been the Orioles’ third-base coach.
Mansolino reached Double-A as a professional but no higher in his playing career.
The Orioles will be hoping this is the spark they need to turn their season around.
