In a powerful demonstration of leadership off the field, Boston Red Sox standout Alex Bregman has announced a $7.5 million personal investment to convert a historic Boston brownstone into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth.
The initiative, titled “Safe Haven by Bregman,” aims to tackle the growing crisis of youth homelessness in Boston by providing not just shelter, but comprehensive support services designed to foster stability, education, and opportunity.
“These kids deserve more than just a roof over their heads,” Bregman said during a moving press conference held outside the property in Back Bay. “They deserve a future. This is about helping them find it.”
The shelter will offer housing for up to 60 at-risk youth, aged 16 to 24, and will include mental health services, educational programs, career training, and 24/7 mentorship. Renovation of the 15,000-square-foot property is set to begin this summer, with doors opening in early 2026.
City leaders and advocates for homeless youth hailed the move as both visionary and deeply needed.
“Alex Bregman is proving that true heroes don’t just hit home runs — they show up when it matters most,” said Mayor Michelle Wu. “This is a transformative investment in our city’s future.”
Bregman, acquired by the Red Sox in a high-profile trade last year, has already won over Boston fans with his grit and determination on the diamond. But with this bold philanthropic gesture, he’s making an even greater impact off the field.
While Bregman has previously supported causes related to childhood education and health through his foundation, this marks his most ambitious personal project to date. The shelter will be operated in partnership with several local nonprofits, including Bridge Over Troubled Waters and Boston Youth Sanctuary.
“We’re building more than a shelter,” Bregman emphasized. “We’re building hope, stability, and a second chance.”
As the Red Sox look to make a postseason push, Bregman’s leadership is already being felt far beyond Fenway Park — setting a powerful example of what it means to be a player, a teammate, and a community advocate.
