In an unprecedented act of generosity and compassion, University of Kentucky basketball star Otega Oweh has pledged his entire $15 million signing bonus and sponsorship earnings to charities focused on homelessness, hunger relief, and veteran support.
The announcement was made during a press conference earlier today, where Oweh, joined by Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari and teammate Jalen Brunson, emphasized the importance of using his platform to give back.
“There are millions of people struggling every day — families without homes, kids without food, veterans without support,” Oweh said with emotion. “If I can be a light in that darkness, even just a little, then that’s what I’m going to do.”
The $15 million will be distributed across several national and local organizations, including Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, Wounded Warrior Project, and a new Lexington-based foundation Oweh is establishing to provide transitional housing and educational programs for at-risk youth.
Coach Calipari called the move “the most selfless act” he’s seen from a student-athlete in his entire career. “Otega is the kind of person who defines what it means to be a Wildcat—not just on the court, but in the heart.”
Jalen Brunson, who also spoke at the event, praised his teammate’s decision. “This isn’t just a moment—it’s a movement. Otega is challenging all of us, athletes and non-athletes alike, to think about what we can do for others.”
Social media has erupted in support of Oweh, with hashtags like #OwehGivesBack and #WildcatWithAHeart trending nationwide.
Though Oweh is projected to be a first-round NBA draft pick, his focus today was on something far beyond the game. “Basketball is my passion, but being a decent human being—that’s my purpose.”
