The suggested transaction would be a blockbuster, with Detroit acquiring Andersson for two young NHL forwards and a draft selection.
The Red Wings would acquire Andersson, a legitimate first-pairing defenseman who can improve Detroit’s blue line. Andersson is in the final year of his six-year, $27.3 million contract. His name has surfaced in trade rumors, and he may not re-sign in Calgary. With the Red Wings, Detroit can form a blue line around Andersson and Moritz Seider. Andersson scored 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points in 81 games.
In exchange, Calgary would receive Danielson, who was drafted ninth overall in 2023. Danielson can serve as a middle-six forward for the Flames, bringing some youth to the team. Danielson is preparing to begin his three-year entry-level contract.
The Red Wings would also trade Rasmussen, who was drafted ninth overall in 2017. The 26-year-old hasn’t lived up to expectations, but he can still be a reliable middle-six centerman. He is in the second year of his four-year, $12.8 million contract. Rasmussen scored 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 77 games.
Defense is a major need for the Red Wings.
Detroit enters the offseason with adding to the blue line as a top priority.
According to NHL analyst Brennan McClain of Pro Hockey Rumors, the Red Wings’ top offseason priority is to strengthen their defense.
“To make things easier, the Red Wings could buy out either Chiarot or Holl. McClain said, “Leaving a cap hit of $2.83 million or $2.27 million for the next two years, respectively.” “Despite a subpar year offensively compared to his recent productivity, Detroit should have little trouble finding a trade partner for Gustafsson and his $2 million salary. By deleting two of the three, Detroit would have the option of keeping one for the bottom pairing. Include a top-four option on the free agent or trade market.”
Seider, Chiarot, Holl, and Gustavsson are all under contract as the Red Wings head into the offseason. So Detroit has room for at least two more defensemen on the roster and might make a significant move for a top-pairing defenseman.
Insider Expects Flames to Receive Calls for Andersson.
With Andersson entering the final year of his contract, his name has come up in trade talks.
Andersson may not re-sign in Calgary, and if that happens, the Flames may contact him. On June 9, NHL insider Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff stated on DailyFaceoff Live that the Flames are willing to trade him.
“I think the Calgary Flames are in a spot where they are open to lots of different things,” Seravalli told the press. “I believe they understand that Rasmus Andersson will most likely be too expensive and long-term for them. He had a mediocre season compared to his own standards.
“I’m wondering if the best play here is if you’re not getting exactly what you’re looking for, just hang on to him,” says Seravalli. “Trade him by the deadline. I don’t believe his worth to the Calgary Flames will be any higher today than it would be if he had a strong start to the season.”
Andersson has 536 career games and, at 28, would be a good match for the Red Wings or any other competitive team.
