The Green Bay Packers announced the anticipated decision to cut ties with their standout cornerback, Jaire Alexander, earlier this week. As other clubs in the league began the required minicamp phase of the summer, the Packers decided to sever their relationship with Alexander because they were having trouble moving on from the highly paid veteran cornerback. When the talented cornerback went on the open market, numerous organizations were connected to him as usual. Many teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, were urged by supporters and pundits to consider Alexander for the 2025 NFL season.
Could the Alexander-Eagles pairing come to fruition? One major NFL insider didn’t rule it out. “Jaire Alexander, if the price is right and you’re doing a one-year deal–whatever the number is, a low number–they can go make that work if that’s what they want to do,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter told 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia. Schefter’s comments came shortly after he dismissed the idea of the Eagles acquiring the Cincinnati Bengals’ star pass rusher, Trey Hendrickson, via trade. Adding either of them would be a high-profile move for Philadelphia, but they are two distinct circumstances.
Hendrickson is searching for a new deal and a big paycheck. Any team interested would have to prepare a new contract in addition to giving up assets to get him off the Bengals’ roster. In Alexander’s scenario, the contract price just has to be appropriate for both parties. Earlier this week, a former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback indicated that the Eagles may have a significant advantage in Alexander’s market because they recently won at the highest level. “If I’m Howie, I roll the dice because one thing Howie has that the other teams have.. Championships!” Bryant McFadden stated this week. “A recent championship. That may be an excellent recruiting pitch to land a player like Jaire Alexander.”

The Eagles are content with their young secondary, but they recently lost several seasoned veterans in the defensive backfield. Darius Slay signed a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Isaiah Rodgers took his talents to the Minnesota Vikings. While Alexander’s availability is a concern, having played in only 14 games over the previous two seasons, the Eagles’ defensive backfield will provide plenty insurance. Alexander has 287 tackles and 12 interceptions across 78 games. He has played in seven playoff games since 2019, totaling 28 tackles, three interceptions, and five pass deflections.
