In a stunning development that has electrified the football world, the Denver Broncos have officially announced that Hall of Fame quarterback and franchise icon John Elway is returning to the organization—this time as a co-owner.
The Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group, which took control of the Broncos in 2022, confirmed the news in a press release Friday morning, calling Elway’s return a “historic and deeply meaningful moment” for the team, its fans, and the city of Denver.
“John Elway is synonymous with Denver Broncos football. His leadership, both on and off the field, helped shape the identity of this franchise,” the statement read. “We are honored to welcome John back as a partner and co-owner. His insight, championship mindset, and legacy will be invaluable as we build toward a winning future.”
Elway, 64, spent his entire playing career with the Broncos (1983–1998), leading the team to five Super Bowl appearances and winning back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998. Following his retirement, he served as an executive with the team for over a decade, including as General Manager and President of Football Operations, during which he helped construct the Super Bowl 50 championship roster.
In a brief but emotional statement, Elway expressed his excitement:
“The Denver Broncos are part of my soul. This team, this city, and these fans have meant everything to me. I’m thrilled to return in this new role, and I’m ready to help the Broncos reach new heights as part of this incredible ownership group.”
