Former Canucks superstar and Hockey Hall of Famer Pavel Bure, affectionately known as “The Russian Rocket,” has officially returned to his old team — this time behind the bench, taking on a senior coaching role.
Team president Jim Rutherford confirmed the news at a packed press conference on Monday afternoon.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Pavel back to the Canucks family in this new capacity. His knowledge of the game, passion for winning, and deep bond with Vancouver make him an incredible asset for our coaching staff,” Rutherford said.
Bure, who scored over 400 career NHL goals and remains one of the most electrifying players in Canucks history, expressed excitement about mentoring the next generation.
“Vancouver has always felt like home. I’m grateful for this opportunity to give back to the organization and to help these talented young players achieve their dreams,” Bure said.
Fans quickly flocked to Rogers Arena, many sporting vintage #10 jerseys, chanting his name and sharing memories of his dazzling breakaways and iconic playoff runs in the 1990s.
Head Coach Rick Tocchet welcomed the move, calling Bure’s appointment a “game-changer” for player development, particularly in honing offensive skills and breakaway strategies.
The Canucks have not won a Stanley Cup but remain hungry for success, and management hopes Bure’s championship pedigree and relentless drive will inspire the roster.
Ticket sales reportedly spiked within hours of the announcement, as fans hope to see the legendary Rocket light a spark in a new generation of Canucks hockey.
