The NHL offseason just delivered a seismic jolt as the Edmonton Oilers pulled off a blockbuster trade, acquiring All-Star goaltender John Gibson from the Detroit Red Wings. The deal, confirmed late Sunday evening, sees the Oilers send a package including Jack Campbell, two first-round picks (2026 & 2028), and top goalie prospect Olivier Rodrigue to Detroit in exchange for the veteran netminder.
This move reunites Gibson with his longtime Team Germany teammate and friend, Leon Draisaitl, creating a formidable duo in Edmonton as the Oilers gear up for another Stanley Cup push.
Gibson, 32, spent just one season with the Red Wings after being traded there from Anaheim last summer. While his stint in Detroit was short, it was effective—posting a .915 save percentage and 2.49 GAA in 54 starts, helping the Wings return to playoff contention. However, with Detroit entering a retooling phase and prioritizing future assets, moving Gibson for a significant return made sense from both a cap and development standpoint.
For Edmonton, this is a win-now statement. The Oilers have been plagued by inconsistent goaltending in recent seasons, and despite strong performances from Stuart Skinner, the front office made it clear they needed a proven, battle-tested presence in the crease. Gibson brings exactly that—along with postseason experience and a calming veteran demeanor.
“John is a game-changer,” Oilers GM Ken Holland said in a statement. “We believe he gives us the best chance to win now and brings the kind of leadership this locker room thrives on.”
With Connor McDavid, Draisaitl, and now Gibson leading the charge, the Oilers look more dangerous than ever. The 2025–26 season may just be Edmonton’s best shot yet at bringing the Stanley Cup back to Alberta.
