It looks like Nick Riewoldt is still feeling hurt about the 2010 AFL Grand Final replay where St Kilda lost to Collingwood.
The Saints had a great chance to end their championship wait since 1966 during strong seasons in 2009 and 2010.
But they lost to Geelong in the 2009 Grand Final, tied the first Grand Final in 2010, and didn’t have enough energy left when they got beaten badly in the replay that same year.
Riewoldt is seen as one of the best players who never won an AFL championship, and one fan reminded him of that, which upset the former St Kilda captain.
While Riewoldt was doing his media duties at an AFL game, two jokers decided to copy a moment from the 2010 Grand Final replay.
In that game, it seemed like Nick Riewoldt was all set to score St Kilda’s first goal.
Riewoldt reacted angrily after a fan tried to grab him while he was busy with his media work for Channel 7.
The supporter wanted to imitate the moment when Heath Shaw blocked what seemed like a sure goal from Riewoldt in the 2010 Grand Final replay.
But Collingwood’s Heath Shaw made one of the best defensive plays of the match, jumping in from behind to stop the shot.
Commentator Anthony Hudson perfectly described it, saying Shaw “came up behind him like a librarian. “
The block became a sign of Collingwood’s determination as they went on to control the game.
So, the two fans decided to surprise Riewoldt while he was in front of the camera, bringing back that moment.
One fan sneaked up and gave Riewoldt a big hug, while the other chanted, “Heath Shaw, Heath Shaw, Heath Shaw, he’s come up on him like a librarian! “
Riewoldt didn’t find the situation funny; he pushed the fan away and turned around with a disgusted expression, looking ready to throw punches.
It was clearly a moment in AFL history that Riewoldt wanted to forget, especially not wanting to be reminded by a fan who got too physical while he was doing his media duties.
Viewers commented that the “rude” fan was lucky Riewoldt didn’t hit him right then.
Another person said, “You’re lucky he didn’t knock you out.”
Someone else wrote, “Clearly still a touchy subject. “
Chris Jones, the Seven Director of Sport, advised other fans not to grab or touch players when they are working.
“It’s important that our team feels safe in those situations,” he said.
“We really value interacting with fans, but any physical contact that makes our team feel unsafe while they’re working isn’t right. “
“Nick’s reaction to the unwelcome contact was just a normal human response meant to protect those around him.
“We do not support violence in any way, and keeping everyone safe is our main concern. “
We appreciate the many fans who greeted our team and behaved well, making the game between Seven’s Adelaide Crows and Collingwood the top-rated AFL match of the 2025 season, up to now.
