The Boston Red Sox have a hole at first base and may need to swing a trade to fill it. Without many marquee first basemen available, the team could find a high-upside bat on a struggling team.
Triston Casas’ injury has opened the door for a trade. While Kristian Campobell is being considered at first base, a trade may give the Red Sox a more immediate option to stay competitive. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggested Nathaniel Lowe of the Washington Nationals could be a potential trade target. He is not a superstar, but the first base market has drastically changed from a year ago.
“As far as external options go, though, it’s not pretty—at least not compared to this time last year, when Paul Goldschmidt, Pete Alonso, Christian Walker and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. all looked like possible trade candidates,” wrote Miller.
Lowe is hitting just .221, but has eight home runs. Even though he is not an elite option, he would still be an upgrade over the Red Sox’s current situation. He also has the potential to outperform expectations. He was a Silver Slugger in 2022 and a Gold Glover in 2023 with the Texas Rangers.
Lowe has 20-home run potential and is making just $10.3 million this year after settling in arbitration. He will be a free agent in 2027, but the seven-year veteran could be a great asset for the Red Sox right now. The Nationals are 21-27 and could become sellers at the deadline.
The team is four games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East. Adding stability at first base could be the first step in closing the gap between themselves and the reigning AL champions.
