Quinyon Mitchell enters his second season in the NFL as one of the rising stars at the cornerback position after a stellar rookie season out of the University of Toledo.
But the Philadelphia Eagles may be making a small change to Mitchell’s position.
Mitchell spent the 2024 season lined up as the Eagles’ right boundary corner. At OTAs earlier this week, Mitchell lined up as the left corner.
That spot was previously held down by Darius Slay.
“I’ve been working on both sides,” Mitchell told reporters. “Just getting my feet wet on both sides.”
Slay left the Eagles to sign with the Steelers, vacating a key presence on the Philly defense.
Some teams have their cornerbacks follow wide receivers, but with Slay, the Eagles always kept their guys on one side.
They could opt to change that and let Mitchell follow the other team’s top weapon no matter where they align. Or they could feel he’s best served on this opposite side of the formation.
Or it’s nothing at all and just a fun way to get some fresh reps for Mitchell.
But NFL teams aren’t in the business of wasting time. Mitchell’s repetitions on the new side are telling us something.
As the offseason rolls along, it’ll likely become more clear exactly what this all means for Mitchell.
