In a historic move that’s sending shockwaves through the NBA and thrilling fans across generations, Boston Celtics co-owners Wyc Grousbeck and Stephen Pagliuca have officially announced that Larry Bird — the iconic Hall of Famer, three-time NBA champion, and enduring symbol of Celtics greatness — is returning to the franchise in 2025 as a co-owner.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at TD Garden earlier today, where Grousbeck and Pagliuca described Bird’s return as “a full-circle moment” for the storied franchise.
“Larry has always been the heart of the Boston Celtics,” said Grousbeck. “Bringing him back — not just in spirit, but in leadership — is a monumental day for our team, our city, and the entire NBA.”
Bird, 68, spent his entire 13-season playing career with the Celtics, amassing three NBA titles (1981, 1984, 1986), three MVP awards, and earning 12 All-Star selections. Known for his fiery competitiveness and clutch shooting, Bird became one of the league’s greatest players and remains one of Boston’s most beloved sports icons.
Following his retirement in 1992, Bird went on to a successful executive career, most notably with the Indiana Pacers, where he served as head coach and later as president of basketball operations.
Now, in 2025, Bird returns to where it all began — this time at the ownership level.
“The Celtics are part of who I am,” Bird said in a statement. “I’ve worn the jersey, I’ve celebrated with the fans, and I’ve bled green my whole life. Coming back in this new role is an honor, and I’m ready to help guide this franchise into its next era of greatness.”
Bird will join the Celtics ownership group as a minority partner, with a focus on player development, basketball operations strategy, and fostering the team’s championship culture.
