Onyekuru is one special talent that have all it takes to be a top top player for Monaco and by extension the Nigerian National Team. However, things seems not to be working for the Nigeria International at the moment.
This article is aimed at pointing reasons why Onyekuru should be able to get his career back on track after a disappointing year in the football scene.
Background
Henry Onyekuru started his career with Qatar owned Academy in Nigeria, Aspire Academy and eventually joined Eupen. He had one of the most unlikely breakout for most Nigerian Players.
During his first season, Onyekuru scored a few goals for Eupen but it was in the second season that saw him make a name for himself in far away Belgium.
It was during this season in 2016 that Onyekuru was able score 21+ goals for Eupen across all competitions. It was such form and talent that attracted Merseyside team, Everton.
In 2017, Everton spent more than £8million to sign Henry but he could not feature for the Club due to issues with work permit. A loan deal was prepared for Onyekuru which saw him join Andelecht. At Andelecht he was able to score 9 goals in 19 games, such form ensured he was called up to the Nigerian National Team but in the build up to the 2018 World Cup, Onyekuru suffered a serious injury that saw him return to Everton for a surgery.
Though he was able to recover on time from the injury he suffered, his manager at the club refused to play him over fitness concerns. He will eventually miss out on Gernot Rohr’s squad for the 2018 World cup in Russia and this spelt the beginning of some strange things in the youngsters career.
In late 2018, the tricky and pacy Onyekuru was later loaned to Galatasaray after rejecting Andelecht, he was prolific for Gala, scoring 14 goals and laying on a couple of assists. He formed a formidable partnership with the likes of Sofiane Feghouli.
By the end of the 2018/19, Everton decided to sell their priced asset after failing to secure work permit for the player. Galatasaray wanted him back but couldn’t cough up Everton’s asking price for the club. Monaco were eventually able to secure the signature of the Nigerian but he had an awful first half of the season at Monaco and hence, was eventually loaned to Galatasaray again in Turkey.
Onyekuru who joined Galatasaray in January 2019, managed just one goal in many appearances. With three managerial changes taking place within one season, finally Monaco brought in Niko Kovac a former Bayern Munich coach who was sacked by the Bavarians at the end of the 2018/2019 season
Its now or never for Onyekuru with a top manager and quality players aroun him
With a top manager in Niko Kovac, Onyekuru has a good manager to learn the act of football once again from.
Surprisingly, Niko Kovac during Monaco’s preseason camp expressed his admiration for the Monaco number 7 and also Gelson Martins, saying that “both players offer something special going forward”.
He is equally surrounded by top players which includes the likes of former Chelsea Midfield Maestro, Cesc Fabregas.
Such a quality player could supply the services that Onyekuru will be needing to start scoring goals again. Onyekuru also have a goal scoring wizard in Wissam Ben-Yedder who was joint top scorer with Kylian Mbappe last season meaning that he is guaranteed that his key passes and services will be utilized effectively by the striking duo of Gelson Martins and Ben-Yedder.
Hopefully, Onyekuru gets back to his best so that Nigerians can look up to another young talent running defenses rag in Europe just like Moses Simon, Chukwueze and Osimhen.
