Peter V’landys, chairman of the National Rugby League, has called for an urgent international meeting after confirming the shocking deaths of two fans following the match between the Brisbane Broncos and the Penrith Panthers at Suncorp Stadium.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred shortly after the final whistle of the Panthers’ commanding 26–0 victory, when tensions between rival supporters escalated outside the stadium. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as groups of fans from both sides became involved in heated arguments that quickly turned into physical confrontations. Security personnel and police moved swiftly to break up the clashes, but the situation had already spiralled into a serious emergency.
Emergency services were called to the scene after two supporters collapsed during the aftermath of the altercation. Paramedics attempted to provide urgent medical assistance, but sadly both individuals were later pronounced dead. Authorities have identified the victims as Michael Thompson, 34, a Brisbane Broncos supporter from Logan City, and Daniel Harris, 29, a Penrith Panthers fan who had travelled from Sydney for the match. Their families have since been notified, and tributes have begun to pour in from members of the rugby league community.
In a statement released early Saturday morning, V’landys expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and stressed that violence has no place in sport. He confirmed that an emergency international meeting involving senior officials, security advisors, and representatives from major rugby league organizations would be held to discuss fan safety and preventative measures.
“This is a heartbreaking day for rugby league,” V’landys said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the two supporters who lost their lives. Rugby league is built on passion, but that passion must never cross the line into violence. We will take every possible step to ensure our stadiums remain safe environments for everyone.”
The meeting is expected to include officials from Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand, with the focus on strengthening crowd-control measures, improving stadium security protocols, and introducing stricter penalties for anti-social behaviour among spectators.
Both the Broncos and Panthers organizations also issued statements condemning the violence and expressing condolences to the families affected. Club representatives urged fans to remember that rivalry on the field should never translate into hostility off it.
Queensland Police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are reviewing CCTV footage from inside and outside the stadium. Authorities are also appealing for witnesses who may have captured video footage of the altercation to come forward.
In the meantime, the NRL has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment at all matches. League officials say additional security measures could be introduced in upcoming fixtures while the investigation continues.
The rugby league community now finds itself mourning a devastating loss, as supporters, players, and officials alike reflect on a tragedy that has overshadowed what should have been simply another night of sport.
